November 2005
The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) Reported that RV wholesale shipments to retailers were 30,500 units in the November survey of
manufacturers, a 26% increase over totals this month last year. November’s shipment of 19,100
travel trailers was more than half again as many as one year ago with many units this year extended
for relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region. Although the exact number of Government purchases this
fall is as yet unknown, restocking dealer inventories as a result of this unusual demand would
explain a portion of the late year surge in conventional trailer shipments. Year to date, total RV
shipments have surpassed the 350,000 unit level for only the second time in more than 25 years.
Special Note: In November, a total of 7,900 ELUs were reported by manufacturers but not counted
in the RV total. An ELU is defined as a trailer built to F.E.M.A. specifications in compliance with
the RV standard but without holding tanks. The three month total of ELU production through
November has risen to 23,400 units.
Retail sales, as measured by manufacturer reports, for both conventional and fifth wheel travel
trailers, underscores the continued strong performance of traditional RV markets this year. Although type A motorhome sales have fallen slightly behind this point last year, type C
motorhomes have shown gains.
The Index of Consumer Sentiment gained slightly in the November readings, moving up to 81.6
according to the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center. Recent softness in
this indicator seems to be related to special short term circumstances that have most observers
confident in the economy’s recuperative abilities.
Towable RVs
Shipments of all towable RVs increased 33.3% in the November survey, climbing to 26,800 units.
Year to date, shipments were up 7.2% through November as totals rose to 298,200 units.
Conventional travel trailers (including hybrid trailers) have gained 18.3% to slightly more than
180,000 units so far this year with fifth wheel travel trailers off 6.5% on shipments of 79,400 units.
Motorhomes
Wholesale deliveries to retailers of all motorhomes slipped 9.8% in the November survey with a
total of 3,700 units shipped. Totals for both type A and type C motorhomes have trailed totals from
2004 all year with only type B shipments showing gains.
Conversion Vehicles
Shipments to retailers of all conversion vehicles slid in November, falling to 2,300 units and off
20.7% compared to this same month last year. Shipments of van conversions slumped
15.8% to 1,600 units while pickup truck conversions fell 50% to just 400 units.
Year to date, all conversion vehicle shipments have reached 32,800 units through November, off
15% compared to this same period last year. Declines in conversion vans and to a lesser extent,
pickup truck conversions were partially offset by gains in sport utility conversions. Source: RVIA
