To The Editor:

A series of Kampgrounds of America advertisements that have been appearing in camping publications for the past year have been receiving a lot of attention lately from campground owners and industry publications.

The ads use humorous, satirical illustrations to parody the differences between KOA Kampgrounds and campgrounds on the other end of the service spectrum. Yes, campgrounds come in all shapes, sizes and conditions, but we feel that our rigid, industry leading Quality Assurance process, training and operations excellence, and proprietary technology applications give KOA Kampgrounds a competitive advantage in providing a consistently clean, friendly and fun experience to campers. We have chosen to present these differences in a humorous way in our advertising (i.e. Hertz "not exactly," Burger Wars, "or "The Uncola.")

Surprisingly and historically, the commercial campground marketplace has lacked aggressive competition. Yet, competition is the most powerful accelerator of growth and improvement for any industry, and one way to help our industry raise its own bar. KOA will continue to move forward with aggressive and innovative marketing efforts. We believe this will foster healthy competition in the camping industry.

This will be good for business, and even better for campers.

We are disappointed that some of our industry partners have said or implied that KOA is being critical of the camping industry as a whole. Such comments ignore the pivotal role Kampgrounds of America has played in this industry for the past 41 years. We are as committed to leading the camping industry as we have ever been. For example:

  • KOA is a "Champion" sponsor of the RVIA ’s "Go RVing" advertising campaign.
  • KOA is currently partnering with Winnebago Industries in a national marketing promotion for McDonald ’s that will benefit the entire industry.
  • KOA is a primary financial sponsor of ARVC and its programs.
  • KOA ’s executive team serves on a number of industry committees.
  • KOA is leading the way in innovative campground technologies that will revolutionize campground management tools and Internet technologies, setting new standards for all campgrounds.
  •  Every KOA Kampground owner will receive a comprehensive evaluation of their campground by campers in 2003–an industry first!

Feel free to call me at (406)248-7444 if you have any questions or need any other information about KOA ’s unmatched commitment to campers, our industry and our partners.

Go Camping!
