NASCAR on the Web It has been clearly established that NASCAR fans are some of the most loyal and dedicated sports enthusiasts in the country. When they can't get to the track, they can simply turn on the computer and hit the Internet for a daily dose of NASCAR and motorsports news. RV News asked Cliff Maurand, webmaster at Victory Lane Online (www.victory-ln.com) to select ten interesting web sites that fans and newcomers to NASCAR might like to review. Cliff is associated with the Falk brothers in Virginia. Joe Falk is the owner of the #91 Monte Carlo that has appeared without a sponsor in many NASCAR races over the past few years. This is a dedicated and proficient team. They have run some outstanding races and one can only wonder just how good they could really be if they could secure a full year sponsorship deal. Cliff is a modest fellow so he didn't include his own web site in the top ten suggestions that he has submitted. However, I can tell you that he knows quite a bit about this sport and runs one of the better "fun" sites on the Web. He also has an excellent weekly game on the site that keeps many of us frustrated during the year as we attempt to pick the winners and top ten drivers each week of the season. No sponsors, no prizes, just good clean fun and all you get at the end of the year are bragging rights. Here are Cliff's site selections for true NASCAR fans. NASCAR Online This is the official NASCAR web site. The site includes volumes of information and statistics on many of their racing series. Schedules, standings, and always-current information are posted daily. Results of the weekly race are usually posted within minutes after the winner crosses the finish line and heads for victory lane. Jayski's Winston Cup Silly Season This is the other end of the spectrum from the official NASCAR web site. This site has it all, real news, rumors, and story links to all the race series news. Jayski's site is the most visited NASCAR site on the Internet . . . everyone hits this site, including the drivers and crews. Speedvision You name it, this site covers it. Every aspect of motor racing is covered here. The site is affiliated with the Speedvision TV network. ESPN Known worldwide for their 24-hour sports coverage, this site offers extensive coverage of NASCAR activities. That's Racin' This is the official racing web site of the Charlotte Observer newspaper. North Carolina is home to many Winston Cup drivers and teams and the information, stories, and statistics found here are excellent. Stock Car Fans Newsletter This web site is a back up to their top rated e-mail newsletter that is sent out once per day, and sometimes even more often. They have an extensive mailing list and send various NASCAR related newsletters to over 12,000 race fans, teams, drivers, and owners. Stock Car Reporter This is a fun site . . . and definitely different! The site is written by three Winston Cup crew members and remains anonymous to all readers. They identify themselves only as SCR1, SCR2 and SCR3. They provide some very deep insight into the sport, particularly the technical aspect, and it's straight from the source. Speed Magazine This is the racing side of News-Journal Online, covering all the major auto racing venues. Top rated stories and fresh content is updated several times each day. Catchfence.com This site has links to stories and articles from around the web. It also has some excellent articles written by their own group of contributing writers. Fox Sports With the NASCAR broadcast rights now firmly in their control, they have taken steps to improve the web site. The Winston Cup area has seen a lot of improvement over the last several months. Look for this site to become one of the top sites concerning the Winston Cup series over the next few months. Fan dedication is so great that each of these sites will notice an increase in traffic once this appears in print. They can thank Cliff Maurand and the crew at Victory Lane Online for helping them out. And if you are a major corporation looking to invest in a strong NASCAR Winston Cup program, you can get in touch with Cliff at cmaurand@home.com. RVN |
