And the result of those earlier efforts led to the formation of a national association, RVIA. And that could have never happened without those early organizers working together for the good of the industry.

"I've always felt that you must go to the industry and put on your industry hat. That's the first thing. You can't go to the industry and expect that you are going to benefit your company. It gives you an opportunity to give back to the industry. But it's selfish too. If the industry is improved, everybody is improv-ed."

The contributions that Fleetwood has made over the years may never be truly known nor appreciated.

It's no secret that Fleetwood was not in favor of the current national market expansion advertising program and fought it for several years. Finally relenting to the majority opinion, Fleetwood stepped aside and the program was adopted. So what does Kummer think of the market expansion efforts now?

"Elden and I were talking the other day about how well the market expansion program is going," Kummer said. "Maybe we fought that a little too hard. I told him that the ads have generated 49,000 requests for the video. The video and the lifestyles ads are great ads. We used them on our 'road show' to show investors more about the RV lifestyle.

"I would like to compliment the leaders that are moving forward in the market expansion program. We feel that this is a great program."

As Kummer looks toward the future, he sees a lot of growth potential for Fleetwood, as well as the RV industry.

He said, "In the next 20 years there will be more people who will turn 50 than did in the last 40 years. That's the prime age of an RV user in the higher priced units such as fifth wheels and motorhomes. People love the outdoors. We just have to continue to find ways to providing people the vehicle that fits into that lifestyle. The customers are out there.

"You have to continue to grow. There's a scripture in the Mormon church I attend that's called the 'law of eternal progression.' You either go forward or backwards. That's true in everything in life. You go forward or you go backwards, because you can't stand still. If you try to stand still, people will pass you."

And even though his role has changed and today he sits in the driver's seat, he remains dedicated to a philosophy that has worked for him throughout his career. He said, "When they called me in Pendleton, Oregon, and asked me if I would come down here and be the division general manger, I said, if you want me to do that and think that I can do it, I will try. So over the years I have just been trying. If you get into a different chair, you just take that and continue to build team work. I don't make Fleetwood successful. There are 18,000 people in Fleetwood that make Fleetwood a great company. It's the environment that I help create. I don't build product anymore -- I build people."
