Tiffin, CEO and president with son Van. Standing: sons Tim and Lex. |
Remember the stories our
parents used to tell us about doing business on a handshake, respecting everyone we meet,
and how people would actually work a full week without complaining about something?
That was business in the old days, some would say.
Others, from a different generation, may never have
experienced that kind of business environment. Even worse, they have been schooled in a
different way -- both in the classroom and the work place. Many believe you could never do
business like that again.
Guess what? They are wrong. Dead wrong.
Drive 671 miles south of Elkhart, the perceived melting
pot of the RV industry, and you will wander into Red Bay, Alabama. Red Bay never got
caught up in the new management theories, economic forecasts, or the business environment
many of us wish could be reversed because we are not satisfied with the results we are
getting.
Business 101 is supposed to teach values, character,
morality, respect and a work ethic to be proud of.
Bob Tiffin still teaches this class in Red Bay.
Travel to Red Bay and you travel back in time. Back to a
slower pace, a different set of rules, and a community that cherishes people and the
contributions they make to each other.
It's not "us versus them" in Red Bay.
And it's a refreshing change from the big city and the
"win at all costs" mentality that has impregnated the minds of many business
leaders today.
Bob Tiffin is a quiet, unassuming man. He answered every
question with modesty and a genuine concern for his people, the company, and the
community. Sometimes you have to pull the answers out of Bob. If it sounds the least bit
self-serving, he doesn't want to go there. He would rather talk about his customers than
his company.
This is a proud family, with a proud history.
