Another
pitfall would be if the manufacturer listed their
dealers and linked to those dealers that have web
sites same problem. A visitor to a
dealers web site could pull up the
dealers competitor right in his web site, not
something he would want to do, right?
So
how does a manufacturer steer potential customers to
a dealer? Have the visitor contact you by e-mail and
then provide that customer with the dealer nearest
him, not the whole list. By asking for an address in
the request form, you will have the postal zip code
and determine the nearest dealer by that information.
The
thing that all companies need to keep in mind in
using the Internet is that it is a new, evolving
medium that can be an effective tool for augmenting
your companys message. And it is different from
other forms of marketing in that it is interactive
and dynamic. The rules for how one business segment
makes use of the Internet for an effective use of the
medium may not be universal so use caution in making
decisions about what you do on your web site to
accomplish your goals. And by all means, have goals.
But think those goals through to make sure you
dont inadvertently block what you hoped to
accomplish.
But
you need to be there and you need to move now to
accomplish that. If a logger in Oregon can create a
successful international business almost overnight,
think how important your web site can be to those
wanting information about your products. And if you
think that its too soon because your customers
are not computer literate, your thinking is way out
of date. Thousands of potential customers are looking
for you on the Internet and they are looking for you
now.
