Shipment growth of conventional
travel trailers is largely
responsible for this month’s
strong RV showing. Although
units identified primarily for
emergency shelter have not been
included in these reports, FEMA
(Federal Emergency Management
Agency) has in the past
employed traditional RV floor
plans for this important purpose.
Although the exact number
of Government purchases this
fall is as yet unknown, restocking
dealer inventories as a result
of this unusual demand would
explain a portion of the late year
surge in conventional trailer
shipments.
Retail sales show similar patterns
with conventional, including
hybrid travel trailers, along
with fifth wheel units have done
best. Average wholesale prices
have also trended upward this
year and total dollar value of
shipments for the year seem certain
to set another all-time
record high.
The Index of Consumer
Sentiment gained slightly in the
November readings, moving up
1.1 points to 92.8 according to
the University of Michigan’s
Survey Research Center.
Towable RVs
Shipments of all towable RVs
rose 12.3% in the November survey,
rising to 20,100 units. Year
to date, shipments were up 15%
through November as totals
climbed to 278,300 units.
Conventional travel trailers
(including hybrid trailers) have
gained 16% so far this year with
fifth wheel trailers up the most
with a 22.3% gain.
Motorhomes
Shipments to retailers of all
motorhomes were off 8.9% on
deliveries to retailers of 4,100
units in November compared to
one year ago with type A shipments
slipping 15.6%. Still, earlier
gains have assured a successful
year and through November
totals for all motorhomes are
up 16.8% on shipments of
65,900 units.
Conversion Vehicles
Shipments to retailers of all
conversion vehicle continued to
slip in November, dropping to
2,900 units and off 17.1% compared to this
same month last year. Shipments of van conversions
tumbled 26.9% in November to 1,900
units. Pick up truck conversion held steady with
deliveries to retailers of 800 units in November
while sport utility vehicle conversions rose 100
units.
Year to date, all conversion vehicle shipments
have declined 14,800 so far this year, a
drop of 27.7% from this same period last year.
Declines in all vehicle types have been reported
with conversion vans dropping nearly a third
from its totals last year.
