Chevrolet's '97 S-SERIES PICKUP
Chevrolet S-Series is the compact pickup with "dual personalities." On the one hand, it's built for work. With a cargo box length of more than 7 feet (long wheelbase models) and a maximum trailer rating of 3 tons (when properly equipped), S-Series definitely showcases its rugged side. But, there's also the fun side. With a choice between a spirited 2.2 Liter 4-cylinder or two hefty Vortec 4300 V6 engines, models like the ZR2 4x4 and options like Sportside, third door and 2WD SS, the S-Series pickup offers the best of both worlds. The 1997 S-Series begins with tougher frame components. All 2WD models now have increased frame stiffness which gives an improved ride. Chevy engineers have improved the powertrain and chassis as well. The 4L60-E automatic overdrive transmission, standard on all models, has been enhanced in two ways. First, the transmission fluid pump has been refined to achieve as much as a 20 percent increase in pump output, resulting in smooth shifts and increased operating efficiency. Second, a revised clutch plate design reduces the potential for slippage, providing a more efficient operation. Plug-in half shafts have been added to the drivetrain of all 4x4 models, reducing weight by 7-10 lbs. per vehicle. Serviceability is improved as well. An Electric Pickup model for fleet customers makes its debut for 1997. Available as a Front-Wheel drive Regular-Cab, this newcomer can carry payloads up to 850 lbs. and travel 40-60 miles before recharging. Since safety and comfort are important to truck buyers, the S-Series Pickup just might exceed their expectations with a comprehensive list of standard safety features: a driver air bag to help protect the driver in the event of a front-end collision; four-wheel anti-lock brakes to minimize wheel lockup; automatic Daytime Running Lamps which makes S-Series more visible to other drivers; and side-impact door beams that help protect occupants in a shallow-angle side collision. Two new colors are available for 1997 S-Series Pickup models: Fairway Green Metallic and Medium Beige Mystique Metallic. The interior of S-Series pickup was designed "from the inside out" to make everyday commuting and errand-running comfortable. Optional bucket seats include a manual lumbar adjustment for the driver. A single two-sided key operates both doors and ignition. Standard interior features like cup holders, integral armrests in the door trim panel, door panel storage pockets, a passenger-assist grip, sunvisor map straps and Solar-Ray tinted glass add to driver and passenger comfort and convenience. The uplevel LS trim adds cloth door insert panels, floor carpeting, a 60/40 custom cloth split-bench seat (includes armrest, storage compartment and dual cup holders), map light and two auxiliary power outlets. Available power window, door lock and mirror controls are backlit, making them more visible at night. S-Series pickup fits a wide range of lifestyles. The 4x4 ZR2 Wide-Stance Sport Performance Package (available with both Regular- and Extended-Cab models) is designed for serious off-roaders. The "rebel" of the S-Series family, the 4x4 ZR2 has a wide stance and an off-road suspension meant for tackling tough terrain. Performance truck enthusiasts will appreciate the 2WD SS Package that makes S-Series pickup a "muscle truck" for the streets. A Vortec 4300 V6 provides the muscle, while the ZQ8 Sport suspension, including 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels and monotone paint treatment adds to its no-nonsense appearance. S-Series pickup can be ordered in 2WD or 4x4, Regular- or Extended-Cab models, and with a choice of different chassis packages to suit a wide range of driving needs. With its car-like comfort and truck-like toughness, 'the 1997 S-Series Pickup is an excellent companion vehicle for RVing. |
